Why "Sierra Alpha?"
As I progressed through flight training in a Cessna 172R, I was often struck by how well the discipline of flying translated to investing.
Just as pilots learn to compartmentalize their emotions during a crisis situation, investors must learn to minimize the impact of behavioral biases, especially when the market turns against them.
The term "Sierra Alpha" is slang for Situational Awareness, which is how pilots are trained to always be aware of what is happening both inside and outside of the cockpit. By always observing and understanding their surroundings, a good pilot (just like an informed investor) can anticipate emergencies and minimize their impact.
